INSTITUTE OVERVIEW

REGISTRATION AND WELCOME (8:30 a.m.)

MORNING SESSIONS (9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.)

 KEYNOTE PRESENTATION:
"Brain Matters: Ways Neuroscience Informs Mediation"

Keynote Presenters: Robert Doyle, M.D., and Ranna Parekh, M.D.

Drs. Doyle and Parekh will explore some of the latest research on the ways that the human brain is biased. Evidence shows that bias reactions may be hardwired during development, and understanding this can help mediators recognize bias responses that the person with the biased view might not be conscious of having. Sometimes, biased reactions happen reflexively and almost feel natural. In such cases, a person might be blind to his or her biased views. Understanding this, mediators can identify inherent biased opinions of various parties involved in a mediation process and then factor these into their negotiations in order to work towards a mutually acceptable resolution.

"From Overt Domestic Violence to More Subtle Forms of Power Imbalance"
Presenters: Ellen Waldorf, Esq., Lynn Cooper, Ed.D., and Victoria Spetter, Esq.

Your practice will be presented with a host of challenges regarding power, control and abuse. As a mediator, how do you recognize and handle abuse or power imbalance and under what circumstances do you end the mediation?

BUFFET LUNCH (12:30 p.m.)

(Vegetarian options will be available.)

Featuring MCFM’s 10th Annual Presentation of the John A. Fiske Award for Excellence in Mediation

EARLY AFTERNOON WORKSHOP (1:40 p.m.)

"Family Law: The Year in Review"
Presenters: Jonathan E. Fields, Esq., and Cate Blake, Esq.

LATE AFTERNOON WORKSHOP (3:15 p.m.)

"Let's Try That Again -- Mistakes I've Made as a Mediator"
Panelists: Howard I. Goldstein, Esq., Michael Leshin, Esq., Lisa J. Smith, Esq., and Doris Tennant, Esq.

This panel of experienced mediators will share what they’ve done in mediations that they’d prefer to redo or omit altogether. Participants will gain insights and practical tips from these mediators’ honest reflections. Learn from this panel as you evaluate your own experiences and develop greater skill and ease as a mediator.
